about Tension Headaches:

A tension headache - condition involving pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck, usually associated with muscle tightness in these areas, though the tension can begin in other parts of the body including the legs, arms, shoulders, back, hip, feet, fingers and even the groin. Tension headaches are common forms of headache. They occur at any age, but in adults and adolescents. If a headache occurs two or more times weekly for several months or longer, the condition is considered chronic head ache. Tension headaches result from contraction of neck and scalp muscles. One cause of muscle contraction is response to stress, depression, anxiety. Any activity that causes the head to be held in one position for long time without moving can cause headache. Such activities include typing, computers, fine work with the hands, drawing, printing, knitting, gardening, driving, sports, technical thinking, concentration and use of a microscope. Sleeping in a cold, frigid room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal unusual position may also trigger this type of tension headache. Other causes include eye strain, leaning, poor posture, fatigue, alcohol use (including the drinking of wine and beer), excessive smoking (including both pipe and cigar smoking), excessive caffeine use, sinus infection, nasal congestion, overexertion, colds, and influenza. Tension headaches are not associated with structural lesions in the brain and have little lasting side effects.
